How to Potty Train a Puppy or Adult Dog?

To potty train your dog, you will need patience, consistency and a positive attitude. Potty training can take several weeks or even months, depending on the breed, age and individual temperament of your dog. Here are some tips to get you started:

First, create a designated spot outside where your dog can go potty. Consistently take your dog to this spot and use a command, such as "go potty," to help your dog associate the spot with elimination.

Next, establish a regular feeding schedule. Feeding your dog consistent meals at similar times will help them establish a regular potty routine.

When it’s time to go outside, leash your dog and bring them to the designated potty area. Wait for them to eliminate and then reward them with praise and a treat immediately after. This positive reinforcement will help your dog understand that going potty outside is what you want them to do.

If your dog has an accident in the house, don't punish them. Instead, interrupt the behavior, pick them up and bring them outside to the designated potty spot. Over time, your dog will begin to understand that going potty outside is the right thing to do.

With consistent training and positive reinforcement, your dog will soon learn to potty outside. If you need additional guidance or support, our puppy training program offers potty training and more. Contact us today to learn more and schedule a consultation.
